Michel de Savoye – Fin de vie

En 1984, Annette et Michel déménagèrent dans une résidence pour retraités de l’enseignement (dont il faisait partie, grâce à ses premiers emplois). Les locataires de cette résidence avaient formé une association; et, évidemment, Michel en devint le trésorier.
Les années se succédèrent. La santé d’Annette soudain se dégrada. Cancer ! Tout un mauvais coup du sort, tant pour Annette que pour Michel. Et pour le comble, peu de temps après, c’est le cœur d’Annette qui faiblissait. Courte hospitalisation, décès.
L’emphysème poursuivait son méchant travail. Une nuit de février 1996, alors qu’il se levait, sans doute pour aller à la toilette, il perdit conscience et se blessa au dos en tombant. Le moment allait venir où il devrait quitter son appartement.
In 1984, Annette and Michel moved to an education retiree residence (which he was part of through his first jobs). The tenants of this residence had formed an association; and, of course, Michel became its treasurer.
The years went by. Annette’s health suddenly deteriorated. Cancer! Quite a twist of fate, both for Annette and for Michel. And to top it off, soon after, Annette’s heart faltered. Short hospitalization, she passed away.
Emphysema continued its nasty work. One night in February 1996, as he was getting up, presumably to go to the bathroom, he lost consciousness and injured his back as a result of a fall. The time was coming when he would have to leave his apartment.
En juin1996, Michel déménagait dans une jolie chambre aux Jardins du Haut-Saint-Laurent, lequel offrait tous les services requis pour une personne peu autonome. Ses deux fils et son petit fils Éric vidèrent son appartement, se séparant les meubles et articles qui ne pouvaient être relocalisé dans sa nouvelle chambre. Pour faciliter ses déplacements dans son nouvel environnement, un triporteur électrique fut acheté (sa Cadillac, disait-il).
In June 1996, Michel moved into a lovely room at the Jardins du Haut-Saint-Laurent, which offered all the services required for a person with reduced capacities. His two sons and little child Éric emptied his apartment, parting with furniture and items that could not be relocated to his new room. To facilitate his movements in his new environment, an electric scooter was purchased (his Cadillac, he was saying).
Malheureusement, peu de temps après, sa capacité respiratoire en vint à requérir une alimentation constante en oxygène. Un court séjour à l’hôpital Laval fut nécessaire avant qu’il puisse être relocalisé dans un CHSLD, celui de l’hôpital Jeffrey Hale. Là aussi, il avait une chambrette, son téléviseur et quelques menus objets auquel il tenait.
Unfortunately, soon after, his breathing capacity came to require a constant supply of oxygen. A short stay at Laval Hospital was necessary before he could be relocated to a CHSLD, that of Jeffrey Hale Hospital. There too, he had a small room, his television set and a few small items he cared about.
Pour son 90e anniversaire, le 5 juin 1998, un diner d’anniversaire fut tenu au CHSLD avec la famille proche.
Si à l’arrivée au CHSLD, Michel était relativement alerte physiquement et mentalement, l’immobilité avait réduit considérablement sa mobilité. Et entraîné une fatigue qui réduisait sa capacité à converser.
Il faut souligner que le personnel fut de tout temps des plus attentionnés.
For his 90th birthday, on June 5, 1998, a birthday dinner was held at the CHSLD with close family.
If on arrival at the CHSLD, Michel was relatively alert physically and mentally, immobility had considerably reduced his mobility. Which resulted in fatigue that reduced his capacity to maintain a conversation.
It should be noted that the staff had always been most attentive.
Le dimanche 21 mars 1999, comme à chaque dimanche, son fils Pierre lui rendit visite dans l’après-midi. Au moment du départ, comme toujours, ils échangèrent un « au revoir et à la semaine prochaine ».
Le lendemain matin, à 10:30, alors que Pierre arrivait à la Colline Parlementaire à Ottawa, le téléphone sonna pour l’informer du décès de Michel : il s’était étouffé en mangeant son petit déjeuner; les manœuvres de réanimation furent infructueuses.
Après incinération, les funérailles eurent lieu dans l’église du Saint-Sacrement. Outre les membres de la famille et des membres du personnel du CHSLD, étaient présents nombre de ses connaissances et de celles de ses fils. Ses cendres furent inhumées auprès de celle de sa deuxième épouse, Annette, dans le cimetière Belmont.
On Sunday March 21 1999, as every Sunday, his son Pierre visited him in the afternoon. Upon departure, as always, they exchanged a « goodbye and see you next week. »
The next morning, at 10:30 am, as Pierre arrived at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the phone rang , informing him of Michel’s death: he had choked on his breakfast; the resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
After cremation, the funeral took place in the Church of the Saint-Sacrement. In addition to family members and some CHSLD staff, many of his acquaintances, as well as those of his sons, were present. His ashes were buried next to his second wife, Annette, in Belmont Cemetery.
Suite aux funérailles, un léger goûter fut servi aux personnes présentes, au sous-sol de l’église.
Le soir même, au restaurant, les membres de la famille partagèrent un souper à la mémoire des disparus. Et, signe de la Vie, Christopher, fils de Robert et petit-fils de Michel, annonça alors que son épouse Kathryn, était enceinte. Premier arrière petit enfant de Michel ! ! ! En décembre suivant, elle fut prénommée Maëve.

Following the funeral, to those present, a light snack was served in the basement of the church.
That same evening, in a restaurant, the family members shared a dinner in memory of the missing. And, sign of Life, Christopher, son of Robert and grandson of Michel, then announced that his wife Kathryn was pregnant. Michel’s first great grandchild! ! ! ! The following December, she was named Maëve.
